Original 1859 Cuban Railroad Stock Certificate – Empresa del FerroCarril de Guantánamo  Share No. 1799

An impressive original 19th-century Cuban railroad stock certificate, issued in Santiago de Cuba in 1859 by the Empresa del FerroCarril de Guantánamo.

This historic certificate represents one share valued at 100 pesos and is individually identified as Share No. 1799.

The elaborately engraved certificate features a prominent early steam locomotive vignette, ornate typography and decorative borders. It was printed in New York by Snyder, Black & Sturm, 92 William Street.

The reverse is particularly interesting, preserving an extensive succession of handwritten ownership transfers and endorsements accumulated over several decades. Visible dated transfers include 1879, 1881, 1883, 1886, 1902 and 1905, creating a remarkable documentary record of the certificate's long history.

Later endorsements include references to Lawrence Turnure & Co. and the Guantanamo Sugar Company, adding further interest for collectors of Cuban railroad, commercial and sugar-industry history.

The certificate retains its original handwritten signatures, endorsements, stamps and cancellation markings.

CONDITION

Fragile antique condition.

The approximately 165-year-old paper is delicate and should be handled with considerable care.

The certificate exhibits substantial age-related toning and staining, folds and creases, edge wear, small tears and other imperfections. There is a significant tear/area of paper loss at one corner, as clearly visible in the photographs.

Numerous handwritten endorsements, transfer markings, stamps and cancellations are present on both sides and form part of the historical character of the document.

No restoration has been performed.
