1888 Spain Alfonso XIII 5 Pesetas Silver Coin – “Pelón” – Antique Spanish Crown

Offered here is an original 1888 Spanish 5 Pesetas silver coin issued during the reign of King Alfonso XIII of Spain.

This impressive large silver coin features the young King Alfonso XIII facing left, a distinctive portrait that gave this early series its popular Spanish nickname “Pelón.” The surrounding inscription reads ALFONSO XIII POR LA G. DE DIOS.

The reverse displays the crowned Spanish coat of arms between the Pillars of Hercules, together with the famous PLUS ULTRA motto and the denomination 5 PESETAS.

Struck at the Madrid Mint, this substantial crown-size coin was produced in .900 fine silver. The standard 1888 MP-M issue had a mintage of approximately 10,644,000 pieces.

Condition: This is a circulated antique coin showing genuine evidence of age and use. The surfaces exhibit numerous scratches, contact marks and general circulation wear. The portrait has noticeable flattening and wear across the higher points, with a small darker spot visible on the upper portion of the head. The reverse retains good definition in the crowned Spanish arms, pillars, lettering and denomination. The rims appear generally complete from the areas visible in the photographs.
