1898 General Shafter Headquarters Los Mangos Cuba – Spanish-American War Postcard

Early antique Cuban postcard depicting Los Mangos, Cuba, identified on the card as the headquarters camp of U.S. Major General William R. Shafter on June 28, 1898, during the Santiago campaign of the Spanish-American War.

The bilingual caption reads:

“Bohios ‘Los Mangos’ – Campamento de Shafter el 28 de Junio 1898 – Headquarters of General Shafter on June 28, 1898.”

The image depicts traditional Cuban bohíos, or rural thatched dwellings, surrounded by tropical vegetation at the location associated by the postcard with Shafter's headquarters during the American advance toward Santiago de Cuba.

The historical date printed on the card refers to the scene represented rather than necessarily to the date the postcard itself was manufactured.

The reverse features an early undivided-back format headed “Unión Postal Universal / Union Postale Universelle – Cuba,” with instructions stating that only the address was to be written on this side.
