1947 Cuba “Al Pueblo” San Fernando de Camarones Civic Protest Broadside

Original Cuban civic protest broadside dated May 1947 from San Fernando de Camarones, Cuba.

Headlined dramatically “AL PUEBLO,” this period document calls residents to a “Gran Asamblea Popular” organized by the local Comité de Defensa Local and Comité Cívico Juvenil.

The broadside states that more than 60 days had passed since a local commission visited the President of the Republic on March 13 seeking government funding for construction of a desperately needed highway and other public works. Residents were summoned to meet on Thursday the 15th at 8:00 p.m. at the Asociación de Colonos to decide how to proceed.

The document is explicitly dated “San Fernando de Camarones, Mayo de 1947” and bears the printer's imprint “Imprenta ‘Quiñones’, Cruces.”

The broadside documents an important local campaign. Historical accounts of San Fernando de Camarones describe the community's long struggle for a road connecting the town with Paradero de Camarones, including civic protests and the later designation of the town as “Ciudad Rebelde.” The road was ultimately completed and inaugurated in 1949.

An unusual surviving piece of pre-Revolution Cuban civic and political ephemera, documenting grassroots organization and infrastructure activism in a small Cuban community.

Condition
Fair vintage condition. Overall age toning with creases, handling wear, edge and corner losses, and several tears, particularly along the upper edge and upper corners. The reverse is blank with visible age toning. Despite the fragile edges, the printed text is complete, dark and clearly legible. Please review photographs carefully.
