Original 1953 Banco Nacional de Cuba one-peso banknote issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Cuban national hero José Martí (1853–1953).
The obverse features a finely engraved portrait of José Martí alongside an allegorical representation of the historic Manifesto of Montecristi of 1895, an important document associated with Cuba's struggle for independence. The reverse displays the Cuban national arms against a map of the island and the commemorative dates 1853–28 de Enero–1953.
