Original 1960 Cuban 1 Peso banknote issued by the Banco Nacional de Cuba and featuring Cuban national hero José Martí.

This historic note is from the first Cuban issue of 1960, carrying the signatures of Felipe Pazos Roque, President of the Banco Nacional de Cuba, and Rufo López Fresquet, Minister of Finance. The first 1960 emission included the 1, 5 and 10 Peso denominations under Pazos; Cuba's second 1960 emission would carry the signature of Ernesto “Che” Guevara as President of the Banco Nacional.

The obverse features a finely engraved portrait of José Martí, one of the most important figures in Cuban history and a leading intellectual and advocate of Cuban independence. The reverse displays the coat of arms of the Republic of Cuba in an ornate engraved composition.

Printed by the American Bank Note Company, this note represents an especially interesting transitional period in Cuban history immediately following the 1959 Revolution.
