1961 Cuba 50 Pesos Che Guevara Signature Banknote – Pick P-98a – Calixto García

Original 1961 Banco Nacional de Cuba 50 Pesos banknote, featuring Cuban independence general Calixto García Iñiguez and the distinctive printed “Che” signature of Ernesto Che Guevara in his capacity as President of the National Bank of Cuba.

This note belongs to Cuba's historically significant new currency issue of 1961. The series was introduced during the August 1961 currency exchange and was printed in Czechoslovakia. The new series consisted of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 peso denominations, all bearing Che Guevara's signature.

The reverse features a striking political and industrial composition commemorating the nationalization of foreign companies on August 6, 1960, including industrial facilities, the Cuban flag, armed revolutionary figures and gasoline pumps marked ESSO and ICP.

An evocative piece of early Revolutionary Cuban monetary history combining the signature of Che Guevara with imagery documenting one of the major economic transformations of the period.
