Original Cuban political broadside from approximately 1944 attacking Fulgencio Batista as he prepared to leave the Cuban presidency.

Headlined “COSAS QUE PASAN – Adiós, Sargento…”, this striking Spanish-language political piece is signed Jesús J. López and directly addresses Batista, criticizing his political career, personal fortune, associates, and approximately eleven years of influence over Cuban public life.

The text opens by addressing “sargento Batista” as he leaves the Presidential Palace and later recalls his remarkable rise from humble origins and the military ranks to colonel and president.

Its closing lines are particularly pointed, bidding farewell to Batista as “sargento,” “millonario,” and “Rubén Zaldívar”—the latter referring to the name under which Batista was originally registered.

The historical context strongly places the broadside around 1944, when Batista's constitutional presidency ended and Ramón Grau San Martín succeeded him, following Batista's rise to national power beginning with the military upheaval of 1933.

Of additional interest, historical records identify a Cuban journalist named Jesús J. López as a writer for the Havana newspaper La Discusión, where he authored a section also titled “Cosas que pasan.” The exact relationship between that earlier newspaper column and this later political broadside has not been conclusively established.

An evocative surviving piece of pre-Revolution Cuban political ephemera, offering a contemporary critical perspective on Batista decades before his final overthrow in 1959.

Fair antique condition. The sheet shows substantial age toning, scattered foxing and staining, multiple original fold lines, edge wear, small tears at fold intersections, and paper loss/damage at the lower left corner and other minor edge areas. The reverse is blank and shows corresponding age toning and foxing.

Despite its age and fragility, the printed political text and signature remain substantially complete and legible.
