An intriguing classic Cuban stamp from the famous 1883 “Arañitas” (Spiders) overprint issue, produced during the Spanish Colonial period.

The Arañitas control overprints were introduced in 1883 following the theft of a large quantity of postage stamps from the Havana Post Office. Elaborate ornamental designs derived from devices associated with Cuban lottery printing were applied to distinguish legitimate postal stock.

This example is the 5 Centavos de Peso denomination and features a striking red Arañitas overprint that is strongly displaced toward the upper-right corner, leaving portions of the ornamental design outside the normal stamp area and additional red design elements visible near the lower edge.
