Vintage Mongolian Cobalt Blue & Gold Dragon Wine Set – c.1980s

An extraordinary vintage Mongolian ceramic drinking set featuring a dramatic cobalt-blue glaze, gilt dragon decoration, and sculptural dragon-form handle.

The set consists of a tall covered ewer or vodka vessel accompanied by six matching drinking cups, creating a complete seven-piece presentation set.

The ewer is the centerpiece of the collection. Its deep cobalt-blue body is decorated with an elaborate gold-tone dragon moving through stylized clouds, while a large three-dimensional dragon forms the handle and extends dramatically along the side of the vessel. The matching cups continue the cobalt-blue and gilt decorative scheme.

The set is believed to date from the 1980s or earlier and is attributed to Mongolian ceramic production in Ulaanbaatar, possibly associated with the historic Ulaanbaatar Porcelain Factory / Mongol Shaazan. 

Provenance

Received as a gift in Mongolia in 1987 and retained in the same private collection since that time.

This known provenance establishes that the set was already in existence by 1987 and provides an unusually specific history for a vintage decorative set of this type.

Condition

Vintage pre-owned condition with age-related wear and minor manufacturing or surface irregularities visible upon close examination. The gilt decoration shows characteristics consistent with age and handling.
