1869 Republic of Cuba 1 Peso – Ten Years’ War Revolutionary Currency – Carlos Manuel de Céspedes – Serial 26120 – Rare Cuban Banknote

An original 1869 One Peso note of La República de Cuba, issued during Cuba’s struggle for independence from Spain in the early years of the Ten Years’ War.

The face displays the early Cuban coat of arms at left, the prominent inscription “LA REPUBLICA DE CUBA”, denomination UN PESO, and red serial number 26120. The elaborate nineteenth-century typography and engraved ornamental border give the note a particularly attractive appearance despite its extensive circulation.

The printed text states that the note would be accepted by the Republic of Cuba for payment of contributions, customs duties and other obligations. This was therefore much more than ordinary commercial paper: it represents the effort of the Cuban revolutionary government to establish its own monetary authority while fighting for independence.

The note is dated 1869, making it a surviving financial document from one of the most important periods in Cuban history.

Condition: This example is heavily circulated and shows substantial age-related wear consistent with its more than 150-year history. Numerous vertical and horizontal folds and creases are present, including several pronounced fold lines. The paper is toned throughout and shows scattered staining, spotting and soiling. There is noticeable edge wear with small nicks and losses along portions of the margins, particularly along the upper edge. Several ink marks and dark stains are also visible on the face. The reverse is blank, as expected for this issue, and clearly displays the accumulated folds, toning and staining.

Despite the condition, the principal printed design remains remarkably legible: LA REPUBLICA DE CUBA, UN PESO, the Cuban arms and serial number 26120 are all readily visible. No attempt has been made here to assign a professional numerical grade. The photographs show the actual note offered and should be considered an integral part of the condition description.

For collectors, the principal attraction is its historical context and the signature of Cespedes. This is an authentic piece of 19th-century Cuban independence-era currency, produced while the movement for an independent Cuban republic was actively challenging Spanish colonial rule.
