The obverse features the left-facing portrait of Alfonso XII, surrounded by the inscription ALFONSO XII POR LA G. DE DIOS, with the date 1881 below.
The reverse displays the crowned Spanish coat of arms between the Pillars of Hercules, surrounded by REY CONSTL. DE ESPAÑA, with the denomination 5 PESETAS and the M.S.-M. assayer marks.
