1914 Cuba 5 Centavos Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda Stamp – Scott 263 – Unused

Issued by the Republic of Cuba in 1914, this 5-centavos commemorative postage stamp honors Cuban-born poet and writer Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda on the centenary of her birth.

The blue engraved-style design features a central portrait of Avellaneda surrounded by the inscriptions “Fue la más grande entre las poetisas de todos los tiempos,” “República de Cuba,” and “Correos Año 1914.”

Cataloged as Scott #263 and Yvert #174, this example is unused and retains aged gum on the reverse. It has a hinge remnant or adhesion near the upper edge, general toning, gum disturbance, and a vertical area of discoloration visible from the back. Some perforations are irregular or shortened. Unused, previously hinged. Original gum appears to remain but is aged and disturbed. Hinge remnant or adhesion at the upper edge, overall toning, reverse discoloration, and some irregular or shortened perforations. A possible thin beneath the hinge area cannot be ruled out. No cancellation is visible.
