An authentic ancient Roman bronze coin issued during the reign of Emperor Valens, who ruled the Eastern Roman Empire from AD 364 to 378.

This AE3, or nummus, survives from the final decades of the fourth century—approximately 1,650 years ago—and has been authenticated and permanently encapsulated by NGC Ancients.

The obverse retains the recognizable profile portrait of Emperor Valens surrounded by portions of the original inscription. The reverse is considerably worn, reflecting the extensive circulation and age of this ancient coin.

Valens ruled the eastern half of the Roman Empire alongside his brother Valentinian I. His reign ended dramatically in AD 378 at the Battle of Adrianople, where Valens was killed during the catastrophic Roman defeat by the Goths—one of the pivotal military events of the late Roman Empire.
