Original early 20th-century postcard depicting the winding Carretera de Puerto Boniato near Santiago de Cuba, identified on the image as “No. 36. Carretera Puerto Boniato, Santiago de Cuba.”

The photograph captures an early automobile traveling along the narrow mountain road as it curves through the lush tropical landscape outside Santiago. A stone roadside structure and retaining wall appear prominently in the foreground.

Puerto Boniato and its mountain road were popular subjects of early Cuban postcards, documenting one of the best-known scenic routes in the Santiago de Cuba region. Contemporary postcard archives preserve several views of the road and surrounding landscape from the early decades of the 20th century.

The combination of the mountainous roadway, tropical vegetation and period automobile makes this an appealing piece of Cuban transportation and travel history.
